Si la prémisse peut faire sourire, la démarche est noble et très sérieuse. Haircuts by Children est une performance sur les coupes de cheveux insensées, le pouvoir et la confiance. C’est une invitation à mettre sa vanité de côté, à renoncer au contrôle et à se fier à la créativité, à la dextérité et à la responsabilité d’un enfant de 10 ans. Par ce geste artistique et politique, le collectif cherche à modifier les traditionnelles dynamiques de pouvoir qui se jouent entre jeunes et adultes. Il crée ainsi un safe space, une zone de bienveillance où les mineurs et les majeurs qui vivent dans la même communauté peuvent se rencontrer et partager une expérience créative unique.

Haircuts by Children is exactly what its title indicates: after having been trained by the Mammalian Diving Reflex collective and a professional hairdresser, children offer free haircuts to adults in a city salon. While the premise may make you smile, the approach is refined and very serious: Haircuts by Children is a performance about crazy haircuts; about power and trust. It’s an invitation to put vanity aside, relinquish control and trust in the creativity, dexterity and responsibility of a 10-year-old. Through this artistic and political gesture, the collective seeks to change the traditional power dynamics that play out between youths and adults, creating a safe space where children and adults who live in the same community can meet and share a unique creative experience together.

Établi au Canada, le collectif Mammalian Diving Reflex considère les interventions artistiques innovantes comme un moyen de déclencher la générosité et l’équité dans l’univers.

Fondé en 1993 par son directeur artistique, Darren O’Donnell, Mammalian constitue un atelier de recherche et d’art qui se consacre à l’étude de la sphère sociale, toujours à l’affût de contradictions à transformer en expériences esthétiquement fascinantes.

Mammalian est un atelier de production culturelle qui crée des performances propres à un site et à une collectivité, des productions théâtrales, des installations participatives en galeries, des vidéos, des objets d’art et des textes théoriques. L’ensemble de leurs travaux est interconnecté, varié et dynamique, et reflète leur corpus unique et croissant de connaissances et d’expertise sur l’utilisation et la fonction de la culture. Le collectif crée des œuvres qui reconnaissent la responsabilité sociale de l’art en favorisant un dialogue entre les membres du public, entre le public et le matériel, et entre les interprètes et le public.

Par ses différentes formes de travail, la compagnie fait tomber les barrières entre les individus de tous âges et de tous milieux culturels, économiques et sociaux, en collaborant avec des non-artistes et en offrant au public la possibilité de participer à l’événement ou de simplement l’observer.

Based in Canada, Mammalian Diving Reflex views innovative artistic interventions as a way to trigger generosity and equity across the universe. Founded by Artistic Director, Darren O’Donnell in 1993, Mammalian is a research-art atelier dedicated to investigating the social sphere, always on the lookout for contradictions to whip into aesthetically scintillating experiences. We are a culture production workshop that creates site and social-specific performances, theatre-based productions, gallery participatory gallery installations, videos, art objects and theoretical texts. Mammalian’s body of work is interconnected, varied and vibrant, reflecting our unique and growing body of knowledge and expertise on the use and function of culture. We create work that recognizes the social responsibility of art, fostering a dialogue between audience members, between the audience and the material, and between the performers and the audience. In all it’s forms, the company’s work dismantles barriers between individuals of all ages, cultural, economic and social backgrounds; we collaborate with non-artists, and offer both participatory opportunities for the audience as well as the traditional option of simply watching the proceedings as they unfold. It is our mission to bring people together in new and unusual ways, in Toronto, Canada, our home-base, and around the world, to create work that is engaging, challenging, and gets people talking, thinking and feeling.
